W. Dongtan Station (서동탄 역)

with 2 comments

The newest part of Line Number 1

Dongtan sits about an hour outside of Seoul and is serviced by Line Number 1 via Byeongjeom Station (병점 역). This is highly advantageous, since one can hop on the Number 1 line and get right to the heart of Seoul. But the station itself is in Byeomjeong and not Dongtan, so that meant getting on a short bus ride to the station. As Dongtan continues to grow, Line Number 1 has grown with it… and now we have W. Dongtan Station (서동탄 역).

Since this is a new addition to Line number 1, one might wonder where does it really go?

The answer is not that impressive: Byeongjeom Station (병점 역).

That’s right! This spur line is for one stop. In fact, it’s location is far enough away from the city center, that one needs to talk a bus to this station… the same bus that takes you to Byeongjeom Station (병점 역).

Build it and they will come... eventually.

Because of this, there really isn’t any draw to take the new spur line… yet. When Dongtan and the other outlying areas grow, having this tie-in to Line Number 1 will allow commuters greater access to Seoul via the commuter lines. To put something like this in place at this early stages shows some great forward thinking… but as it stands right now… the trains run empty.

  1. LOL at you on the train 😛

But it’s not bad, that they build these before the actual need for it appears… Here in Oslo, it’s pretty much the other way around… Wait until there’s tooooo muuuch people crammed in, and enough complains of course, then up the prices on the tickets a couple of dollars, then MAYBE… just maybe, they’ll give you another carriage… Just maybe…
