One of the things that has been most frustrating things here in Korea has been the money. Now, I’m not complaining that it’s difficult to use (the US has the corner on that market), but rather that there isn’t enough variety of it. You see, for years we’ve had to use the plethora of coins, the 1,000 won note, the 5,000 won note, and the 10,000 won note. That meant that if you were going out, you could easily be carrying twenty or thirty 10,000 won notes in your wallet.

The limitation of that currency was one of the reasons Korea has such a great network of ATMs. That way you don’t have to carry a lot of money all at once. You can carry a bit and then get more. You could also go to the ATM and get a cheque for 100,000 won. The danger with that single cheque is that it is valued the same as cash and doesn’t have to be signed over to anyone. They’re great when going out shopping, but a little dangerous to just leave in your pocket.

But after many years, the Korean government finally introduced a new note. I’ve been trying to get my hands on one for the past three months and have finally succeeded.

50,000 Won BABY!

50,000 Won BABY!

Oh what a joy it is to have access to that kind of note now. I guess, I should go to the bank more often and buy them. I think this is my new favorite note of all time.

Take a look at your money and your travels. What is your favorite kind of money?
