The hikers

One of my favorite things about visiting Arizona, is meeting up with my good friend Hiking Don. Over the years we’ve traveled through the southwest hiking the trails and chit-chatting along the way. On this particular visit, we decided to tackle an old favorite: Pichacho Peak.

The peak rises about 1500 feet off the desert floor and offers some great views of the desert. The park is located just north of Tucson and offers several day hikes and camping year round. There are two ways to get to the top. The scenic Sunset trail (aboout 3 miles) and the shorter, and steeper, Hunter trail (2 miles).

I usually prefer the Sunset trail, since it offers some great views of the Sonoran Desert and the backside of the mountain. The Hunter trail climbs up the front side of the peak, but offers little variety in views.

As you can see, it’s awesome. What I, and many others really like about the hike, is that once you make it up to the saddle, the fun really starts. The Arizona Park Service took the time to implant steel poles and cables into the mountain’s face that allow visitors to climb up easily.

The way up there is totally worth it! Since Don and I went there on a Tuesday morning, no one was at the top with us… well we did have one visitor.
