The Su-neung (수능): Korea’s University Entrance Exam

with 4 comments

Filmmaker Richard Lucchesi, a Kyung Hee University English Professor wanted to know more about the Su-neung (수능), a test that everyone in Korea knows about, and that virtually all high school students have taken since 1993. It’s a university entrance exam, and is still the most common way to enter university in Korea.  Offered once a year in November, as many as 600,000 high school seniors students sit for the exam each year. They traveled the streets of Seoul speaking to its residents about their experiences. This film is dedicated to the millions of people who have studied for and taken the Su-neung (수능) university entrance exam in Korea, and for those who have yet to do so.

  1. Korean universities have that reputation… how about once they get in? Japanese unis are hard to get into but then it’s one big party for 4 years!

    • It’s pretty much the same here. Although some of the more respected universities require more work. But essentially, once a student is at the university level, then the level of work required is far less.

However, some schools, like Kyung Hee University, enforce a strict quota system on the number of A’s and B’s in a class. In one of Richard’s English classes, he has to limit the number of A’s to 14, no matter how well the students perform.

  2. Hey Steve, do you know anything about the Korean university application process? Are students required to undertake any university entrance exams after seneung?

    Thanks.

    • From what I understand, that’s left up to the individual universities.
